In the flowering plant life cycle, pollinators play a crucial role in their success. Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, bats, flies and wasps are some of the important pollinators. Sadly, the population of these pollinators is declining quickly with the use of chemicals, diseases, pollution and diminishing open space. Gardeners can have a positive influence by planting plants that will help these pollinators flourish.

House Plants that Clean the Air

There are some indoor plants that provide a natural way of removing toxic agents like, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air. NASA did a study, and came up with a list of air-filtering plants. You can read more about the Clean Air Study here. 

Here are 5 of our favourite houseplants that will clean the air inside your home.

Aloe Vera

This isn’t just for sun burns! While the gel commonly used for burn treatments is found inside this plant, aloe vera is a great choice for an indoor houseplant that is easy to take care of, and will clean the air.

Tips

Place in indirect light.

Water deeply, but allow the soil to dry at least 1 to 2 inches deep between waterings.

Lavender

Not only is lavender an excellent air purifier, but its scent can have a calming effect – making it easier to fall asleep or deal with feelings of anxiety. However, if you are sensitive to strong fragrances, make sure to check if you are allergic prior to placing in your home!

Tips

Lavender likes light, so a windowsill is a perfect spot for this air purifier. Make sure you have good soil that drains well, and don’t over-water.

Jasmine

Jasmine is another calming and soothing plant. Studies have shown that Jasmine can lower anxiety levels and improve sleep quality, which also contributes to higher levels of alertness and productivity during the day.

Tips

When it is warmer outside (think spring and summer), put your Jasmine plant in full light and keep soil moist.

During winter months, reduce the amount of sunlight. When the blooming period has ended, you can reduce water as well.

Jasmine plants can be climbers. You may need trellis or support to train the plant where to grow. Be prepared to prune!

Snake Plant

Tips

Put your snake plant in an east, west or north windowsill any time of the year.

In spring and summer, don’t water until the surface of the soil is dry. Water even less in the winter or a cool room – wait until soil is quite dry, or if you notice leaves are drooping. Water along the edge of the pot.

Fertilize every spring and dust the leaves as needed.

English Ivy

English Ivy s a natural air purifier, that can potentially reduce mold spores.

Tips

English Ivy prefers slightly dry soil, so make sure to check before you water. Fertilize monthly, except during the winter. The winter is a dormant period.
