When to Plant?
Potatoes like cooler conditions, compared to other vegetables, so they can be planted a little earlier. If planting in mid to late May, plant them at least 6″ deep and 10-12″ apart in the row. If you don’t plant them deep enough, you could risk exposure to hard frost.
Can You Cut Seed Potatoes?
The potatoes can be cut into pieces as lon g as there is a minimum of 1-2 eyes (buds) per piece. If you do cut them, you should let them cure in the air for a few days, so they don’t rot in the ground.
Before planting, work compost or rotted manure and a 6-12-12 fertilizer into the soil. Do not add lime to areas where potatoes are being grown, as they prefer slightly acidic soil. If the pH in the soil is too high, the potatoes will develop scab.
